On December 12, 2011, the Sustainable Energy Initiative held its last breakfast seminar of the year, “Combined Heat and Power and District Heating Strategies”. This event took place at Markham Convergence Centre from 9am-11am and involved a tour of Markham District Energy and the Town of Markham’s solar PV rooftop installation & sustainable energy initiatives. Speakers included Bruce Ander (President, Markham District Energy Inc.), Alex Waters (TRCA/Kortright) & Sten Grahn (Consultant, AF Engineering, Sweden). FES faculty and SEI Co-Chair’s Mark Winfield and Jose Etcheverry moderated the event. Local projects, such as Markham District Energy and Kortright’s Living City were presented as examples as speakers discussed the benefits of implementing CHP and DE projects, locally and internationally. The tour following the event allowed participants to visit heating and cooling production assets, combined heat and power generators and Markham District Energy’s thermal storage facility. MDE operates the fastest growing district energy system in Canada serving Markham’s downtown core.
This event wrapped up the Sustainable Energy Seminar Series for 2011. Stay tuned for upcoming seminar events in January, February and March, 2012!
